Yvonne Conybeare, Executive Director
Yvonne's father used to dance in Harlem in the late 40's, early 50's, and taught Yvonne her first swing steps. The family learned to Lindy Hop together, and Norma Miller calls the Conybeares "The Swinging Family." Yvonne is a theater director with non-profit development experience, and is the founder of Vernacular Productions. She has 15 years experience as a performing arts instructor in elementary, middle school, high school and college, and has taught lindy hop in the past few years. She has dedicated herself to swing culture, and to promoting lindy hop for all ages, and to promoting Harlem culture in the contemporary landscape.
Adam Brozowski, Project Founder
Adam started swing dancing when he was 11 and is living proof of the long term benefits of social dance for young people. In 2010 Adam founded the Harlem Swings! project by traveling and teaching in the Harlem Public School system by himself with a boom box, no funding and a strong hope. He hoped to someday help reignite a community legacy in Harlem for the history of Lindy Hop culture. Adam wished to not only create a new community of dancers but to help Harlem, and New York City embrace and elevate its legacy as the birth place of an often forgotten African American jazz dance form -- Lindy Hop. Adam is passionate about working with youth because he feels they are the next step in the development of communities, both dance and non-dance alike. Adam believes that social jazz dance has the unique ability to transform young people and inspire them to do great things.
A 19 year veteran of the global Lindy Hop community, and professionally trained dancer in New York City, Adam holds numerous national, and international titles for his dancing. Adam had the honor of studying early on with Lindy Hop legends Frankie Manning and Norma Miller as well as a host of original dancers from Los Angeles and since has performed and taught Lindy Hop on stages, screens, in schools and studios around the world. Now residing in Seattle, WA Adam is passionate about the ongoing work of the Harlem Swings! project. www.AdamBrozowski.com ere to edit.
